5 Must-See Films At The 2017 New York Film Festival
The 2017 New York Film Festival lineup is definitely one worth noting. There is a wide range of storylines, characters, themes and more. Based off of reviews and popularity, here is a list of the top five must sees from NYFF 2017.
1. Call Me By Your Name
Directed by Luca Guadagnino, the film tells the love story written by novelist André Aciman. It's the summer of 1983, and 17 year old Elio Perlman (Timotheé Chalamet) is spending time with his family in Italy. During his stay, he meets doctoral student, Oliver, who is interning for Elio's father. As more of their time is spent together, a romance flourishes and an awakening forms for both characters. The film's official release date is November 24.
2. Lady Bird
Christine "Lady Bird" (Saoirse Ronan) is a highly opinionated, angsty, rebellious teenage girl who is struggling to find her independence in Sacramento, California, Catholic school and at home. It's a story of self-discovery, adolescence and the eagerness to just live. The film is set to release November 10.
3. Thelma
It's a sci-fi meets Black Swan kind of film, so what can be better. Thelma (Eili Harboe) is a college student studying at the University of Oslo. While at school, she begins to experience severe seizures, only to learn she has supernatural abilities. These abilities make her form an intense attraction to another student, Anja, and soon she realizes how powerful and terrifying her newfound powers are. This film will be released November 10.
4. The Florida Project
Sean Baker's film has gained attention and been talked about all throughout NYFF. It's a story about childhood, the setting a kind of "utopia" for kids. The film follows six year old Moonee (Brooklynn Prince), and her rebellious mother, Halley (Bria Vinai) for a whole summer. They live in a budget hotel, and despite harsh living conditions, Moonee still finds ways to have an adventure. This film released October 6.
5. Wonderstruck
This story follows two young characters, Rose and Ben, on their separate journeys to find what they have been missing in their lives. Although they grew up in different eras, the characters share the same secret desire to change their unsatisfying lives. This film releases October 20.
