Why We Can Not Kill Net Neutrality

The Internet should not be under the control of the government. It is a free space for everyone, and should be controlled by the public who uses it. We should not have to be worried about being under surveillance of the government and concerned what we do online will be monitored.

According to an article by Wired, there are multiple aspects of the Internet that will no longer be available to use if net neutrality continues to be in danger. Internet-focused companies will be threatened, which will lead to an increase in profits for cable and telecom companies. According to Wired, consumers would be forced to access a distorted internet, where the information being presented to the viewer is prioritized based on financial interests of telecom and cable companies.

Overall, telecom and cable companies want to kill net neutrality in order to gain more money. Net neutrality prevents them from employing a system of prioritization, which means "define the terms of competition in internet search, in news, and in the myriad of markets that we reach through the internet." Since Donald Trump was elected as president, anti-net neutrality forces have become stronger and they are currently lobbying against it in order to protect telecom/cable monopoly.

This can't happen. Net neutrality provides the public with access to information and the freedom to choose, and getting rid of this would just give more power to the government and less to the people. This is an issue of free speech, and Trump is taking that away from us when pushing to eliminate net neutrality. Here is a video from John Oliver explaining the issue and why it's important:
